Ryde Pulse Sprint – available in 20/24/28/32h standard drilling and 28 and 32h off centre drilling. £70/rim or £115 for CSS coated. Black only.

The off centre drilling is recommended for all rear wheels. The standard drilling is only recommended for fronts.

Ryde Pulse Comp, 24, 28, 32h, £85. O/C rear, standard frontspulse sprint

These are very light rims. There is the option of running with CSS sidewalls as well which significantly increases the life of the rims (adding £45 to the cost of each rim and about 15g) however there is only limited availability on them. The extrusion has been very carefully made using a very precise extruder, allowing for careful wall thicknesses. Despite being so light, they have a 90kg rider limit and 120kgf maximum tension rating. That combined with an offset rear makes the builds remarkably stiff and allows for higher than normal tensions on the rear non-drive side. The Comp O/C rear allows for a stiffer build at the back for more powerful riders.

Ryde Pulse Sprint Profiles

Ryde rims are a great choice if you are looking for a high performing set of alloy road wheels.  They are very versatile because you have the option of running tubeless tyres.  They are popular with riders who are worried about carbon delamination during descending and are looking for a set of alloy wheels for mountain riding.  They are also popular for those looking for wheels for light riders.

Claimed weight for the Pulse Sprint is 395g. The ones I have weighed have come in at less than that – around 380g. The Comps come in at around 415g. These rims make exceptionally light builds possible. For example 24:28 Pulse Sprint/CX-Ray/DCR hubs comes in at around 1330g and costs £415.

In order to keep the weight down on these rims, the sidewalls are thinner than some rims. Most performance rims have fairly thin sidewalls; to save weight. It is generally best to use these rims

with decent pads (Kool Stop Dual compound is recommended – £17 for a set of 4 inserts) and also to try and use them in dry conditions if possible. A good life can still be expected on this basis and being hand built wheels, if the rim does wear out, it can be replaced at a reasonable cost.

Owing to the tubeless interface on these rims, the fit is pretty tight. I recommend a good technique and some Birzman tyre levers (£3 for a set of 3). If you wanted to run a wide rim that has an easier fit, I recommend the H Plus Son Archetype or the Kinlin XC-279. The use of tubeless tape also makes the fitting easier for tyres.
