Kinlin XR-26 rims, DCR hubs and Sapim D-Light spokes

The DCR Vivaldi Wheelset is appropriate for competitive summer riding because despite its robustness and price tag it has been well engineered and precisely made.  Our eye has been kept keenly on value, however the set is still hand built by us in Sussex to our usual superlative standards.  The weight has also been kept as low as is realistic (1460g/pair for rim brake, 1600g for disc brake) whilst also providing a stiff and resilient setup. We build the wheels with black rims, black hubs, silver D-light spokes with silver alloy nipples.  The price includes UK shipping and tubeless rim tape.

All Year Round Use

The DCR hubs used here have our dedicated UK weather treatment to ensure maximum longevity and best possible performance, as well as fast freehub engagement and anti-bite system on the Shimano versions.  Campagnolo (including N3W), XD and XDR, and Shimano Microspline freehubs can be fitted if required.  The rim brake hubs can also be adapted between 130mm and 135mm spacing, and the disc brake hubs can be adapted between quick release and thru-axle standards.

Spokes And Nipples

The D-Light is a nice round spoke. It’s lighter than the more common Race, and yet the strength is as impressive in most scenarios. The elbow is still 2mm thick, but this section is cut short early on and the thinner 1.65mm section starts sooner than with most double butted spokes. No material is wasted; this 2mm section doesn’t need to be any longer for most applications. The same at the other end; the 2mm butting starts where the threads begin, rather than further down the spoke. This keeps the spoke light and comfortable.

Using Sapim’s alloy nipples and our nipple/spoke prep means that even in all year round use alloy nipples are still a sound choice.  We provide a lifetime warranty on the build/spokes on this basis.  Changing your hub colour or increasing the spoke count to 24/28 can be done without any additional charge.  Upgrading to black D-light spokes incurs an upcharge of £20, DCR titanium skewers can be added for £30.  International delivery is possible but will incur an additional charge.

Kinlin XR-26T and XR-26RT Rims

The Kinlin XR-26t rim is a sound choice for this sort of wheelset.  It is a practical weight and an accurate extrusion.  A T-10 niobium alloy has been used for additional performance benefits.  Being 26mm deep the rim is robust and nice and stiff, being 24mm wide (19mm internal) it is best suited to tyres from 25c upwards and provides good support for those tyres increasing the volume of air within them.  An offcentre (asymmetrical) version of the rim is used at the rear to increase the drive side bracing angle and the non-drive side spoke tensions.  For best results, we do recommend a tubeless setup on these wheels which we can provide for you should you require.  If you wish to directly purchase the wheelset, you can do so using the links below.  We endeavour to keep this wheelset in stock at all times, should we run out of stock at any point we will write to you as soon as possible to advise.

DCR Aluminium Rim Brake Rims

The DCR 23mm alloy rim and Sapim CX-Ray spoke upgrade is the obvious choice to reduce weight, improve ride quality and retain a high level of lateral stiffness. Unlike the Kinlin rims in the Vivaldi set you now have a welded joint, extra tough spoke bed, lower weight and nice matt finish owing to a shot blasting and anodising treatment (anodised internally and externally). They have a rider weight limit of 120kg and a spoke bed that has been tested to 300kgf. The rim is slightly narrower and shallower than the Kinlin but is still remarkably stiff owing to its clever shape. They work very well with 23/25/28c tyres but wider tyres can be fitted as well. The sidewall is machined silver, so it remains a consistent finish throughout its life. The shape is a modern aero rounded profile. There is a bead locking system and 1.2mm hook for compatible with all road tubeless and tubeless ready road tyres. A deeper central channel ensures easier installation and removal of tyres.

Spokes And Nipples

Sapim CX-Rays are Sapim’s premium spokes. They provide a modest weight saving over the D-light, they are slightly more aerodynamic and slightly more comfortable too. Critically they are a lot more durable and a lot more stable. This comes from a combination of the spoke gaining strength through the flattening process, additionally the spoke being flat allows it to be adjusted with far greater precision. A round spoke will twist when you turn the nipple, which the builder must take into account. An aero spoke can be held steady allowing for much smaller adjustments. Spoke twist is a problem which persists particularly badly in the Laser spoke (light gauge, round) and can cause difficulty during servicing in later life. Where the Sapim CX-Ray is immune to spoke twist, you can service it for a far longer.

Extremely Light But Durable

The prices listed below provide the wheelset including UK shipping and tubeless rim tape.  We build the wheels with black hubs, black spokes and black alloy nipples. Venn 30mm Rim Brake SL

1298g/pair. The Venn 30mm SL carbon rim, DCR standard road hubs and Sapim CX-Ray spokes offer a great lightweight, high ride quality and laterally stiff wheelset. Unlike most rim brake carbon rims on the market, the Venn 30mm SL carbon rims are Graphene impregnated and feature a textured braking surface, providing class-leading braking which is both predictable and reliable. The 21mm internal width works very well with 23/25/28c tyres but wider tyres can be fitted as well. Their shape is a modern aero rounded profile, which although isn’t as aerodynamic as the deeper rims in the lineup (contact us for details) it does keep allow for the impressive weight savings. There is a bead locking system and subtle hook compatible with all road tubeless and tubeless ready road tyres. A deep central channel ensures easier installation and removal of tyres.

Venn 30mm Disc Brake, Standard Or SL

1330g (SL Rims) or 1430g (Standard Rims). A nice wide profile that is suitable for road disc and gravel applications – a great option for a carbon disc brake wheelset. They work very well with 25/28c tyres but wider tyres can be fitted as well, making it a particularly versatile option. It is sufficiently shallow that it provides excellent stability in a range of conditions – the profile is arguably aero however has not been meticulously optimised in this way.  It would be an aero alternative to a box section aluminium rim, however aerodynamically is a poor performer against the Venn 37, 507 and 77 rims.

Light, Strong DCR Rims With 20mm or 25mm Internal Widths

The DCR Standard Disc (20mm) and the XC/AM alloy (25mm) rims offer excellent tyre profiles covering a range from 25c – 50c. They both have a welded joint, an extra tough spoke bed, competitive weight and nice matt finish owing to a shot blasting and anodising treatment (anodised internally and externally), they have a rider weight limit of 120kg and a spoke bed that has been tested to 300kgf. The profile is disc specific to reduce weight.  The shape of the 20mm rim is a modern aero rounded profile, the 25mm rim tapers to a smooth point. There is a bead locking system and 1.2mm hook for compatible with all road tubeless and tubeless ready road tyres. A deeper central channel ensures easier installation and removal of tyres.

The Standard Disc (20mm) rim suits tyres from 25c-38c which makes it the sound choice for cyclocross riders or gravel riders with limited tyre clearance. The XC/AM (25mm) rim will suit tyres from 25c-50c which makes it the sound choice for most gravel bikes or mountain bikes with limited tyre clearance.

The spokes are thicker than usual at the J-Bend for a tighter fit in the hubs, which have extra bearings, steel axles and freehubs for ultimate carrying capacity. The rims have thick spoke beds, and their extra width means extra air in your tyres – that also means greater comfort, lower pressure and better grip. Tough DCR rims in 32mm Or 36mm Internal Widths

The two versions of our E-Bike rim offer excellent strength and good MTB tyre profiles. The 32mm internal rims are well suited to tyres up to 2.4 inches wide. The 36mm internal rims are well suited to They both have a welded joint, an extra tough spoke bed, competitive weight and nice matt finish owing to a shot blasting and anodising treatment (anodised internally and externally), they have a rider weight limit of 180kg and a spoke bed that has been tested to over 300kgf. There is a bead locking system and 1.2mm hook for compatibility with all tubeless MTB tyres. Their internal profile and deep central channel ensures easier installation and removal of tyres.

Spokes And Nipples

The Sapim Force spoke is the obvious choice for this set, to provide excellent ride quality and for an extra strong wheel. Using Sapim’s double square brass nipples and our nipple/spoke prep means that there are no doubts whatsoever as to their durability and strength. We provide a lifetime warranty on the build/spokes.

Critically the Force spokes are thicker at the J-Bend than most common spokes. Most double butted spokes are 2.0mm at each end and 1.8mm in the central section to provide some comfort. The Force is a triple butted spoke, being 2.2mm at the elbow, 1.8mm in the middle and 2.0mm at the threads, to suit common nipples. Their thick elbow means they fit nice and tightly into the hub (which is drilled at 2.6mm), leading to fewer vibrations and less fatigue from stress from the thousands of stress-cycles they go through in their lifetime.

Extra High Load Bearing Hubs

The set comes with our own brand heavy duty, 6-bolt IS hubs with their weather treated bearings for high performance and excellent longevity/serviceability. These heavy duty hubs come with extra bearings – making a total of four bearings in the front and six in the rear – plus steel axles and freehub for ultimate carrying capacity and torque transfer. Boost hubs are also available for this wheelset.
